Dedicated to building stronger, more inclusive communities through principled leadership, thoughtful advocacy, and meaningful collaboration. Entering my fourth decade of public service, I remain deeply committed to advancing educational excellence, equity, and civic engagement—working to ensure that Grand Haven and communities throughout Ottawa County are places where every individual is respected, heard, and given the opportunity to thrive. 

Current Volunteer Leadership

Ottawa Area ISD Board of Education
(2017–2023 &  2025–Present)

 Supporting 11 public school districts, seven Public School Academies, and 18 non-public schools, I help ensure policies and programs effectively address the diverse academic, social, and operational needs of students. My work includes oversight of operational procedures, program evaluation, and regulatory compliance to maintain accountability and quality. I actively contribute to strategic planning initiatives and policy discussions that strengthen educational outcomes across Ottawa County, while mentoring new board members to build strong governance practices and a shared understanding of district priorities.

 

Grand Haven Human Relations Commission
  (2025–Present)

Serve as a liaison between city leadership and the community to promote equity, inclusion, and mutual understanding among all residents. Provide informed guidance on policies and initiatives that prevent discrimination, encourage fairness, and uphold the rights protected under local, state, and federal law. Lead educational programs, facilitate dialogue, and support community engagement efforts that build awareness, strengthen cultural sensitivity, and foster collaboration across diverse groups to create a more welcoming and just community.

American Legion Post 28 SAL

Supporter of veterans, community service initiatives, and charitable outreach through active involvement with the Sons of the American Legion. Committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans while supporting programs that address their needs and those of their families. Participate in fundraising, volunteer efforts, and community events that strengthen local support networks, promote patriotism, and reinforce a shared commitment to service, citizenship, and giving back to the community.

Eagles Aerie 925

Active supporter of community service, charitable outreach, and civic engagement through the Eagles Aerie. Contribute to programs that support local families, veterans, and individuals in need while promoting fellowship, volunteerism, and community pride. Participate in fundraising efforts and service projects that strengthen community connections, uphold shared values, and advance the Eagles’ mission of people helping people through compassion, generosity, and active involvement.

Elks Lodge 1200

Engaged in a wide range of civic service projects, youth programs, scholarship initiatives, and community support activities that strengthen local involvement and opportunity. Serve as the Most Valuable Student Scholarship Coordinator, overseeing outreach, application processes, and selection efforts to help deserving students pursue higher education. Through this role, support academic achievement, leadership development, and community service while fostering partnerships that expand educational access and long-term success for young people.

VFW Post 2326 Auxiliary

Contributor to programs that honor veterans and support military families through active involvement with Auxiliary initiatives. Served three years as Club Manager at the VFW, helping oversee daily operations, coordinate events, and support programs dedicated to veteran well-being and community outreach. Through this work, strengthened partnerships, encouraged volunteer participation, and helped ensure resources and services were available to veterans and their families with dignity, respect, and appreciation for their service.

Past Volunteer Leadership

GHAPS Board of Education
(1999–2021)

Led governance of the school district for more than 22 years, including eight years as Board President, providing oversight of strategic planning, fiscal management, and policy development to ensure long-term stability and student success. Collaborated closely with administrators, educators, and community stakeholders to support high-quality educational experiences. Championed initiatives that strengthened curriculum, improved accountability, and advanced equity and student achievement. Mentored fellow board members and fostered meaningful community engagement in district decision-making.

During my eight years as board president, I mentored the individual who now serves as president of the school board, helping to develop leadership capacity and ensure continuity of strong, effective governance.

 

Michigan Association of School Boards
(2017–2023)

Served on the MASB Board of Directors representing Region 3 districts statewide. Provided guidance on policy development, advocacy, and organizational governance to support Michigan public schools. Promoted best practices in board leadership, facilitated professional development opportunities for school board members, and collaborated with districts and state education agencies to strengthen public education across the region.

Assisted in shaping initiatives to improve student success, governance practices, and educational equity at the state level.

Over 25 years of school board service, I earned all MASB certifications and awards available, including the President’s Award and five Specialty Certifications spanning Advocacy, Community Relations, Data, Finance, and Leadership. 

Grand Haven Schools Foundation
(1999–2012)

As a director of the Grand Haven Schools Foundation, I supported early childhood education and enrichment programs through strategic planning, fundraising, and community outreach. I partnered with schools and local organizations to maximize impact and sustainability, developed scholarships, led fundraising campaigns, and implemented initiatives to support students’ success. I also registered the GHSF.org domain and created the Foundation’s original website, expanding its visibility and community engagement. 

GH Pride Board of Directors
(2025)

As a board member, I actively support the organization’s mission by providing strategic oversight, participating in key decision-making, ensuring financial accountability, and advocating through fundraising and community engagement. I uphold ethical and legal standards while attending board meetings, serving on committees, reviewing financial reports, and contributing to strategic planning initiatives. I also served as Co-Chair of the 2025 Grand Haven Pride Festival, helping lead event planning, community outreach, and volunteer coordination to celebrate inclusion and strengthen community connections.
